You’ll have to trust me. I really didn’t go looking for it.
I was minding my own business, driving down a snowy road looking for signs of wildlife. Out of nowhere an elk would appear. Before I could focus my camera, it would show me a little attitude.
I simply took the photos and wrote the captions based on the evidence before me.
Is there any other reasonable conclusion?

Thanks. They are beautiful animals. Since they are wild animals they can be unpredictable and dangerous during mating season especially the bulls. The rest of the time I treat them with normal caution and don’t get too close.

Nice captures Lyle. Elk are amazing creatures. We spent some time in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado during elk mating season. Their bugle is impressive.

Thank you. Yes I was hoping we would find and I was fortunate. We know there are elk around there but we never know where and I hadn’t looked for them in winter.

Where did you get these? There are a lot of elk just north of the Riding Mountain National Park in MB – also bison. We tend to get there about once a year and go looking for them. Met a bear face to face when coming back from the bathroom one day, a moose with the “hugest” rack guarding the road as we drove back to the cabin. It was actually kind of frightening – backed up the road for quite a while before we felt safe to travel through. That was at Audi Lake.

It sounds like you’ve had some interesting wildlife encounters. It certainly adds some excitement to the day. It’s been a few years since we made it to Riding Mountain but it was nice there. We went up to Prince Albert National Park a couple of weekends ago and found the elk and some gorgeous weather. Had a great time.

Thanks. The evening light just cleared the trees when it was standing on the hill so it all worked out well. It’s always nice to have a little luck during chance encounters with wildlife.

The color contrasts in their coats are very interesting. In the first one it almost looked like it wearing a horse blanket.

It does look like a horse blanket. The light was so low in that photo, I wasn’t sure if I was able to make something and that gave it a different look.

Very much enjoying seeing the Canadian wildlife – so very different to the animals around here. Next time you’re in Australia I’ll treat you to some roos (kangaroos) and echidnas.
