Babies hacked my blog?

Babies? Cute photos? Tender moments? Has Krahnpix been hacked?

Well um perhaps.

Or maybe I’m taking a temporary detour. Don’t worry. The predators, rougher edges and brassy humour haven’t been totally abandoned.

Now there’s breast feeding on this blog? What is going on?

It’s just that I got seriously sidetracked by babies two weeks ago. No that is not a misprint.

Everywhere we went in Jasper National Park, the newer additions to the wildlife families were the stars of the show. There’s no question the young ones looked far better than the adults.

When a herd of elk wandered by, we quickly scanned the crowd to look for young ones and usually found them. Their quirky, energetic behaviour was fun to watch and photograph.

However, there was a much bigger reason that babies were on my mind. Through some strange time-lapse transition, I had morphed from a grandchild playing with toys to being the grandpa.

My granddaughter Nora a few days old – doing what she does best. Yes I’m envious!

Beautiful little Nora arrived with a lot of fanfare and brought me accolades, gifts and congratulations. I have never done so little to get so much.

The strange thing is that only three babies have fascinated me in my lifetime. By some remarkable stroke of luck, those three all ended up in my family. What were the odds? Nora is simply amazing.

I know it’s probably a bit early but I showed Nora some wildlife photos. They seemed to catch her attention in the few seconds her eyes were open.

Of course I would never foist my photography interests on her but if she wants to take some wildlife shots of baby elk, it’s entirely possible I might be able to help out with that.

Krahnpix will soon return to more regular programming.

I think I’ve been doing a pretty good on the enjoying part so far! Nora makes it pretty easy and she doesn’t actually do much. The whole grandpa thing is a brand new adventure. It’s funny when I read the first three words of your comment and thot I could hear you saying that – but I’ve never heard you. It just must be consistent with your “voice.”

Aw-w w. tender moments. I am still upset , occasionally , when I think of the missed shot of a moose suckling her calf but happy for you when you got this. They show an intimacy that is not too common. I find these shots so precious, especially your granddaughter because they grow up so fast. So do you figure a point and shoot for starters?

Too bad you missed that – I can see it in my mind. This elk suckling was a first for me. Precious is a great description. As for my granddaughter’s camera, technology is changing so fast, who knows what will be available when she gets old enough.

Congratulations on the new grandchild, Lyle! Beautiful photos of the elk and Nora, and I would expect nothing less of you than perfection on those anyway. Spend time with that little one, as much as you can. They grow fast and and fly away before you know it.

Almost ran into a herd of elk crossing the road down by Eugene one evening several years ago. Turned down the exit at night onto a country road, so I could take the shortcut home. A large dark form appeared in front of the car, and I slammed on the brakes. The herd crossed the road in front of me.

Thanks so much. Perfection – that is a high standard! I was just pleased the photo of Nora turned out so well since I took it with my iPhone. They certainly do grow fast. It sure doesn’t seem that long since our kids were born but apparently it must be!

Good thing you slammed on the brakes! This whole idea of humans and wildlife sharing roads doesn’t work too well sometimes for either side.

Congrats grandpa. My gift to you of a new walker is in the mail. It will be perfect in the field for propping up a 500 and an old guy.
