The Fall Collection

Fall changes everything. It is an annual prairie ritual as amazing as it is predictable.

Every year it puts a smile on my face, a jump in my step and a reason to feel good. The colours are brighter, the air is crisper and the beauty richer.

I look forward to the explosions of colour in my favourite haunts, like this one.

I am forced to stop in places to take photos that would otherwise be just another nice nature spot. But now there is much more to catch my eye. The normal green trees suddenly become the contrast.

_MG_0659

I find it easier to look for my hawk friends since they are typically hanging out on bales.

DT6C2781

The grass fades into a beautiful backdrop for a deer family.

DT6C3659Even in scenes, where the colour is less dramatic, the softer hues bring new life to familiar scenes.

DT6C4276The colours of the leaves make wonderful reflections in the water, perfect for a late afternoon swim.

DT6C3444And provide backgrounds that make gull photos much more interesting.

DT6C4177

Inevitably the air is filled with the sounds of a few snow geese still a bit rusty at getting the whole formation thing nailed down.

DT6C2936

They typically like it in Saskatchewan and invite a few friends and relatives. Before you know it, there’s a goose party.

Thanksgiving 075

One of my favourite parts of fall begins when the sandhill cranes come through on their annual pilgrimage. Watching their takeoff is like watching the scene in slow motion.

DT6C3025And did I mention that there are explosions of colour everywhere?

DT6C4514

Now if only I could somehow make fall last a little longer.

Beautiful shots Lyle. Love the colors on the first one. Great job. I don’t get to see colors like that in Texas.

Thanks. I’m learning about the areas that don’t get to see colours like that – usually the warm ones like Texas. It doesn’t last long but it’s a special treat.

Super collection, Lyle. That is a really great skein making the geese party. I hope you are seeing lots of color out your way. It is a bit muted around here but I hope for an explosion of color over the next week or two.

Thanks. That was an amazing geese party – just waves of them. Yes we are having lots of colour but the leaves are falling so we’re going to be losing it far too soon as always. Hopefully you have a wonderful fall.

Gorgeous – I think you are about two weeks ahead of us. I noted the sassafras and the poison ivy are turning, but most everything else is still green. It’s my favorite time.

Your photos remind me once again why I enjoy wildlife and nature photography so much. There are always new possibilities as the landscape changes with the seasons, sometimes providing the backdrops to our photos, sometimes becoming the main subject. As your photos and words so eloquently depict, the familiar can becomes new again, bringing with it a sense of inner renewal as well. The birds and animals are busy as they prepare for the coming winter and outdoor photographers seem to multiply (though thankfully there are not quite as many as the geese in that one photo). You last sentence sums up my feelings well–couldn’t we go through this season a little more slowly?

It sounds like you agree! It’s nice to be able to keep a sense of wonder about something we have all seen before. It must be really good. Given your proximity to people, you would notice the increased number of photographers in your travels. I rarely seen anyone.

Thanks so much. Yes it certainly marks a changing of the seasons. I actually dislike the intense heat worse than the intense cold so I”m not bothered by that like others. I’m just happy the temperature agrees with me so well now in the perfect season.
