Imagine my disappointment. Three hours of driving, a gorgeous national park teaming with interesting wildlife, a beautiful lake vista and the only living creatures in sight are … seagulls? Really?
These birds top out at minus one on my interesting-things-to-photograph scale (yes I do have one). There must be something, anything else with a pulse in the area?
Seagulls never leave, so in time I resign myself to shooting them – just for practice. I desperately hope something else will come along. Nothing does. I take photos somewhat unenthusiastically, sarcastically wondering why my card is still in the camera.
Even with my boring creature discount, I begin to notice that some of the shots are looking OK on the camera screen. But when I get home and look again on the computer – it turns out they are still seagulls. I ignore them.
After a few months of aging and more second looks, I have hesitatantly concluded that perhaps familiarity bred a little too much contempt. With remaining reluctance and a little fear that I may scare off readers, I share my seagull images.
Hopefully beauty can be found in unexpected places.
We don’t have gulls here, I like your photos.

Thanks. I thot gulls were everywhere but that’s just because they are common here.

I think the small black-headed ones are known as Bonaparte’s Gull. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bonapartes_Gull/id I’ve actually not seen them very often. Maybe I don’t get out much. Beautiful pics as always Lyle.

Thanks for that info. When I did a little checking around it quickly became apparent there are a lot of gulls.

Sea gulls can be very photogenic in tourist areas. Especially since they will come close to you. I wish all birds would pose like them :-).

I love it. I think you should use a sling shot. It will help you get a better arm.

I like this! Seagulls aren’t exotic or particulary interesting, it takes a good photographer to show how nice they actually look! Well done 🙂

Very high praise. Thanks. It actually took me a while to do this post to get over my own doubts.
